Jericho returns!

So, the season 2 premiere of Jericho is tomorrow night at 10PM EST on CBS.  And I am unbelievably excited.  If you're asking yourself why I'm so excited, you haven't been paying attention.  ;)

The CBS execs and the producers of the show have said that for there to be a third season, the ratings for the first few shows (but especially the first show) have to be phenomenal.  And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little bit worried.  I think it will have strong ratings, mostly because CBS has been promoting the show better, and because people will tune in because they're curious.  But will it be enough?  I surely hope so, I don't think I can tweak my budget to accommodate another peanut-mailing campaign.  ;)

I know that there are Jericho fans on my flist already; if you're not a fan yet, please consider watching the show tomorrow night.  And if you do watch the show, please email CBS and let them know you did.  (Send email to:  audsvcs@cbs.com)

Never underestimate the power of a single voice.

Thursday Night Fight: Lost and Supernatural

Who will win in the battle for Thursday viewers, Lost or Supernatural? And why does this even have to be a fight at all? ABC sucks, that's all I have to say.

My current YouTube favorite

happy
I am amused by random videos on YouTube, as some of you well know.  This one is my current favorite:  Fish Guys.  It's no "Cosmonauty", but it's subtly funny, and I'm all for the subtle giggles.  ("Cosmonauty" notwithstanding, that's just randomly silly, and funny in a different way.)  I'm not making sense, but it's Friday night and I'm tired, so I'm allowed to be all random and odd.  So there.

I watch too much TV.

Well, to be more accurate, I watch too many TV shows.  I didn't realize just how complicated my viewing habits had become until the writer's strike.  Because I'm trying to show solidarity with the WGA striking writers, I've stopped watching any and all TV shows online.  For me, this means that until the strike is over, no more:  Ugly Betty; Samantha Who?; The Big Bang Theory; CSI Miami; and Life.  (And I thought for a while there that the boycott list would also include the Lost mini-webisodes, but luckily ABC has decided to compensate the writers for their work on those, so yay for the writers and yay for me!  Although I hear they're not that fantastic, so maybe I shouldn't get too excited.)

Now, I know that this is not a huge list of shows to be missing out on, but it made me wonder about all the other millions of people out there who watch shows online, and whether or not the networks are noticing a recent dip in the number of streaming videos from their websites.  And if so, maybe this will also help them to realize just how important it is to factor online viewing in as a measure of a show's overall success.  It was only after Jericho was canceled last spring that CBS admitted that 5.3 million episodes of the show had been viewed online.  That's a lot of viewers, and a lot of ad revenue for the network.  And to bring this back around to my original theme, it's only fair that the writers get a little of the money that's generated by their work when it's shown online.  I'd like to see the network suits have to come up with a decent TV script; I think we'd pretty quickly see an end to this strike if the executives had to do all the work themselves--and not get paid a fair percentage for it.  ;)

An online friend died last week.  Her real name was Vicki, but I knew her as “Save The Humans” or STH.  She was a member of The Fuselage, a LOST message board.  She was also a member of the DIMPLES group, admirers of James “Sawyer” Ford, who is a character on the show.  She was, of course, so much more than that, but this is how I knew her.

Being part of an online group is a funny thing.  It’s uniquely intimate, yet oddly de-personalized at the same time.  I think that’s why it appeals to so many people—in real life, most times you do not have the luxury of only sharing the pieces of yourself that you most want to share.  Online, you can be whoever you want to be.  Most of us choose to be as much ourselves as possible, and STH was no different.  She could be just as crabby as the next person (nobody’s perfect), but she was so very often thoughtful and supportive.  She thought nothing of reaching out to someone in need, maybe because she understood what it was like to be in need herself.

She was an incredibly prolific poster at the Fuselage.  She had over 15,000 posts amassed, and she was always so genuinely excited to discuss all aspects the show.  She was a staunch supporter of Sawyer, although once we found out that Sawyer’s real name was James, she insisted on calling him that even when the rest of us were still transitioning to it.  I remember a discussion in the DIMPLES thread about how she felt that James was who he really is, so she refused to continue to call him Sawyer once we learned his real name.

She was so excited about participating in the “Secret Sawyer” gift exchange with the DIMPLES.  She was looking forward to it so much that she already knew what she wanted to buy for her giftee in October, when most of us were still trying to decide whether or not to even participate.  One of her last posts in DIMPLES was about how she’d found the perfect gift for her person--and I bet it was.

She was funny, she was loyal, she could be harsh, but she was also kind.  I did not know her as well as some, and I regret that I will never get to know her better.  Rest in peace, STH.  You are missed.

WGA strike

I feel like an idiot for not realizing until this week that the writers of my favorite shows don't get paid when I watch their shows online.  That they would get residuals when the show airs on network television, but not when the network chooses to stream the show on their website is mind-boggling to me.  I do support the writers with their strike, despite the fact that it might mean disruptions in my favorite shows.   Heck, if I can wait  8 months for the regular LOST hiatus, I can certainly be a little patient about a strike-induced hiatus.

Rich Becker at the Copywrite Ink blog makes an interesting point about how the WGA strike relates to online content.  He mentions that some online blogging platforms (such as Facebook) reserve all content rights to things that you publish on your own blog.  That means that they own what you write, and that they can publish it elsewhere as they see fit, without your consent.  That's kind of scary, if you think about it.  He holds out hope that if the WGA is successful in their demands about Internet content, "the terms that come out of the strike could be used to prompt online content distributors to revisit their terms of service."  Let's hope so.

Oh, and how much do I love that the WGA has been posting almost-daily videos about the strike on YouTube?  Answer:  I love it a ton.  :D  Although, the irony is not lost on me that they are using a non-profit web platform to get support in gaining residual money for shows distributed on the Internet.

Here's one of my favorite WGA vids so far:

I spent the morning doing some Christmas shopping, and I got pretty far on my list, so I'm feeling pretty good right now.  I love marking things off of a list, it makes me feel productive.  And anal-retentive.

I now smell like almost every single scent they carry at Bath and Body Works, which is an odd but pleasing combination.  (Read:  I stink to high heaven, but in a good way.)

I got some of my nephew's Christmas presents, too.   (Legos and golf balls, he's easy to please, God love him.)

Now, if only I didn't have work-work to do this weekend.  Why can't I just spend the week-end making videos?

This made my day.

While I haven't made any new LOST avatars in a while, I do have a few new Jericho avatars I can post.  I also have some old favorites from LOST, that maybe deserve a second look.  These are free for anyone to use, all I ask is that you credit me.  :)

Many thanks to TRoss for the new moniker!  :D

I know I said I wasn't going to put up another widget, and I managed to go this long without getting sucked back into widget world.  But darn it, a really cool one came along and I just have to use it.  I'm seriously considering getting a MySpace page just to have somewhere to put all these cool widgets.  Is that wrong? :D

Supernatural is a kick-ass show that no one's watching!  I mean seriously, last night's episode pulled in less than 2 million viewers, how can it even still be on the air?  Fantastic writing, great soundtrack, cool cinematography, and handsome actors, that's how.  :D  (I've got a mini-crush right now on Jensen Ackles, whose smart-ass character of Dean Winchester reminds me of a lot of Sawyer.)  Oh, and it's on the CW, so I don't think they're as picky about ratings as other networks, hee hee.

If you haven't watched this show, do yourself a favor and check it out.

I don't know, using "google" as a verb always sounds vaguely smutty to me.  That said, I was googling myself the other day (heh heh), and I ran across a couple interesting things.  Well, to be clear, I was googling my screen name, not my real name.  I thought that my screen name, LisiBee, was fairly original and unique.  Sadly, not the case.  As it is, I couldn't use it here at LJ because someone had already taken it (or at Yahoo mail, come to think of it).  So who is this other LisiBee?  Or is there more than one?

This is not me:  http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=39969642  I would just like to say right now, I do not have a MySpace page, so if you ever see "me" over there, it's not me.  ;)

Same MySpace girl who's not me (also, just so you all know, I would never jump off of a 35-foot cliff, nor shoot video of myself doing so.  Just an FYI.)  http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.channel&ChannelID=39969642

I'm pretty sure this isn't me, but I can't be 100% sure as it's in German:  http://www.eventshooters.com/u/Lisibee/?ES-Session=1031ac6afccc9df4e13c3048be6dd0a2

I was a little alarmed at the sheer number of "Jericho" and "Lost" links that popped up in my search.  Uh, those are all me.

And boy, I didn't realize how those YouTube vids make their way around the 'net.  Oddly enough, one of mine ended up on a nutritional supplements website.  I have no idea why.

Curse you, U.S. Postal Service!

The USPS gives with one hand (see yesterday's entry about my Jericho DVD), and cruelly mocks and taunts with the other.  Also arriving in yesterday's mail was my credit card statement with a mystery $100 payment.  That sounds like a good thing, right?  Well, it would have been good had the payment actually arrived at its destination shortly after I sent it, in JULY.  Yeah, you heard me:  my check took two-and-a-half months to be delivered.  I have no idea why it took so long, and I'm unlikely to get any kind of explanation.

A brief backstory on that particular payment:  I was out of town for the month of July, I knew I'd be leaving, so I pre-paid some bills in anticipation of not being here when the statements arrived.  This was one of those bills, a check sent to an un-named credit card company.  It wasn't until I returned in August that I saw on my next statement that the account was delinquent.  This kind of thing never happens, I'm so anal about my credit score it's not even funny.  (Especially after the nonsense with my identity-theiving cousins, but that's a story for another day.)  I got in touch with customer service, explained the situation, made a payment by phone, and asked for the $29 late fee to be refunded.  They were unsympathetic and refused.  (To be fair, I'm sure they must hear all the time about peoples' checks getting "lost in the mail.")  So, I call them back today, explain what happened, they did a little investigating, and have now agreed to refund the $29.  I guess they believe me now that they have the payment in hand--it was even noted on the account that the check was dated back in July.

So to recap:  USPS bad (where the heck has that envelope been for 2.5 months?), un-named credit card company good (29 dollars is 29 dollars, and I feel somewhat vindicated.  Plus, they get extra points for having customer service people working on a Sunday.  The first guy I talked too, despite his excellent English, sounded like he was in China.  The second guy told me he was in Arizona.  Hat's off to you, un-named credit card company, for fulfilling my need for instant gratification!).

I just got my "Jericho" DVD!

I am so excited, this afternoon the mailman delivered my Season one Jericho DVD from Amazon.com!  Now, those of you who know me know that I've had beefs in the past with Amazon, and I most definitely wouldn't have used them for this if I hadn't had a gift certificate to spend.  (I really need to put the word out that no one is to buy me an Amazon gift certificate again.  Ever.)

Oh, the DVD is all pretty and shiny, and it has that new DVD smell, and Skeet's face is on the front....  Sorry, I drifted off there for a moment.  I'd probably enjoy it even more if I actually watched it.  But before I go, I just want to remind you guys that it's available at a reasonable price at Target, and I hear that they have a bonus DVD with their copies.  But it doesn't matter where you buy it, just go buy it!  You'll be happy that you did.  :)

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a date with Skeet.

This will be my last widget for a while, I swear.  (Well, until another one strikes my fancy.)  As promised, here's my "Watch LOST" YouTube Video Player, with a few of my favorite LOST videos.  I can't get enough of these players, I wish I could just put it right on my desktop.  Alas, I cannot, so it's going here.  Enjoy!

A serious widget

Not all widgets are entertaining. Some are simply informative about serious matters such as missing children. Take the widget below from RecentlyMissing.org, a website devoted to recently missing children. By posting this widget in highly public places, such as blogs, they help to combat a serious problem.

On the subject of abuse and neglect, I wanted to mention a Blog campaign that's going on, the Bloggers Unite/Blogging for Hope campaign.  I was a contributing writer on the following two blog entries, please take a look and comment on them.  (The names "Margie and Edna" won't mean anything to you unless you're an online fan of Jericho.  There's a long backstory with them that I won't get into here; however, the message from the blogs are important ones and they supersede any sort of fandom affiliation.)

I swear, I didn't start out this week thinking, "I'm going to go widget-crazy on my LiveJournal, which no one but me reads."  Things just kind of evolved after I fell in love with the YouTube movie player.  I mean really, what's not to love about having cool web gadgets?

The above widget, in case it's not obvious, is CBS' offering to the fans of Jericho.  They have a really cool production blog where they talk about shooting the new episodes and behind-the-scenes stuff, complete with on-set photos.  (I wish LOST had something like that.)  I guess you can use this widget as kind of a portal to the Production Blog, it's supposed to update itself as they post new content.

Ever heard of a web widget? Sure, most of you probably have, being Internet-savvy folk and all. I had no clue what one was until very recently. There are all these cool things out there that you can add to your blogs, Live Journals, MySpace pages, etc. to liven them up. The YouTube player I added yesterday is a good example. Another example is from my new addiction, the Hey!Nielsen website.

Hey!Nielsen, in a nutshell, is like crack for people who are in love with their own opinions. Of course, this is not what it says on their website. Technically, they are owned and created by the Nielsen Company, who are hooking people into giving their opinions on all sorts of pop culture things. They promise that "your opinions not only reach millions of people via the web, but may also reach the media moguls who decide what goes on the air and on the web." Now, I don't know about that, but I do know that I've only been a member since Monday, and I'm absolutely hooked. Check out some of my opinions in my handy-dandy little widget below. If you want to go see for yourself what all the fuss is about, mosey on over to http://www.heynielsen.com. But don't say I didn't warn you.

*Just want to mention, this is the third time I've edited this post to include the widget.  I add the code for the widget, I save the entry and it looks okay, then later the widget has magically disappeared.  Don't know what I'm doing wrong, but clearly my widgeting disagrees with Live Journal.

How cool is this??? I recently discovered that YouTube has a "Create Custom Player" option, you can have it play whatever playlist you put together. This is my "Watch Jericho" version (my video is the second one down on the right). I'll do a "Watch LOST" version pretty soon.

I get excited by such geeky things...
